In short: José Enrique’s football career saw him rise from Spanish rivals to English stardom. He conquered the Premier League with Newcastle and Liverpool before a sudden, life-altering diagnosis shifted his focus from the pitch to a fight for survival.

Born in Valencia in 1986, José Enrique began his professional journey at Levante before moving to their local rivals, Valencia. His path through Spanish football included stints at Celta Vigo and Villarreal, but it was his move to England that defined his career. In August 2007, Newcastle United signed the left-back for an estimated £6.3 million, where he became a standout performer, eventually being voted the club's Player of the Season for 2009–10. After his initial move to Valencia, he spent a season on loan at Celta Vigo. He later joined Villarreal in 2006 following that loan spell.

His success in the Premier League continued when he joined Liverpool in August 2011 for a reported £6 million. During his time in England, he amassed 161 Premier League appearances and secured silverware, including the 2012 Football League Cup. A bizarre occurrence occurred during a fixture against Newcastle, where he had to act as goalkeeper for the concluding 13 minutes following Pepe Reina's dismissal. He also played in the 2012 FA Cup Final, which resulted in a defeat to Chelsea. Additionally, he scored his first goal for Liverpool during a league match against Wigan Athletic.

However, his career was ultimately cut short by persistent injuries. After a brief return to Spain with Real Zaragoza, he announced his retirement in September 2017. The challenges shifted from physical recovery to a medical battle in May 2018, when he was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare brain tumour. Following surgery and a period of recovery, he received the all-clear in April 2019, reflecting on the experience by noting how precious life is. His final professional appearances for Liverpool involved captaining the side in an FA Cup tie against Exeter City. This was followed by a two-year contract with the Segunda División side Real Zaragoza.
