How a former winger rose to lead Sporting CP to championship glory
In short: Rui Borges' journey from the lower divisions of Portuguese football to the pinnacle of the Primeira Liga is a testament to rapid ascent. After retiring as a player in 2017, he transitioned immediately into coaching, eventually securing a high-profile move to Sporting CP in late 2024.
Borges' managerial career began at his former club, Mirandela, immediately following his retirement from professional play in June 2017. His path through the Portuguese leagues was marked by rapid shifts; in September 2021, he was sacked by Académica de Coimbra after seven winless matches, only to be appointed as the manager of Nacional just hours later. This period of volatility eventually led to a more stable ascent through the tiers of Portuguese football.
His breakthrough into the Primeira Liga came in 2023 when he was appointed head coach of Moreirense. Under his leadership, the club achieved its best-ever top-tier finish, ending the campaign in sixth place. This success was bolstered by a significant milestone in December 2023, when Borges secured a three-year contract extension with the club after they earned a 0–0 draw against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz.
Borges' winning streak persisted at Vitória de Guimarães, securing an undefeated 2024–25 UEFA Conference League campaign through six straight qualifying victories. This momentum culminated in his appointment at Sporting CP in December 2024 for a reported fee of €4.1 million. Taking over following the departure of Ruben Amorim and a difficult period under João Pereira, Borges successfully defended Sporting's title and secured the Taça de Portugal with a 3–1 extra-time victory over Benfica. He also guided the club to its first Champions League quarter-final since the 1982–83 season.
His rapid rise was recognized with the 2025 Primeira Liga Manager of the Season award, following a period of significant domestic and European achievement.
