How a goalkeeper rose from Portuguese youth ranks to the Premier League
In short: From making his professional debut in the Portuguese second tier to facing elite strikers in the Premier League, José Sá has navigated a complex career path. His journey through top-flight clubs in Greece and Portugal has defined him as a resilient presence between the posts for both club and country.
Born in Braga on 17 January 1993, José Sá's professional ascent began in earnest in 2013. After moving through the youth ranks of Benfica, he joined Marítimo to complete his development. His professional debut arrived on 23 January 2013 for Marítimo B against Oliveirense, a match that saw him play the full 90 minutes in a scoreless draw.
Sá's career is marked by significant transitions and high-stakes moments. In 2016, he signed for FC Porto for €1.5 million, where he initially served as an understudy to the legendary Spanish international Iker Casillas. Following a period where he was deemed surplus to requirements, he moved to Olympiacos on loan in 2018. This move proved transformative; he became a key figure in the Piraeus side, securing a domestic double in 2020 and winning a second Super League Greece title in the 2020–21 season.
In July 2021, Sá moved to the English Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers for an €8 million fee. He inherited the number 1 jersey, a position previously held by Carl Ikeme until his 2018 leukaemia diagnosis. His time in England has been defined by both brilliance and grit; in late 2022, it was revealed he had played for two months with a fractured wrist. Despite this, he continued to perform, notably saving a penalty from Aleksandar Mitrović in a match against Fulham.
On the international stage, Sá has been a consistent presence for Portugal. He played in the 2017 Confederations Cup squad that secured third place and was included in the side that triumphed during the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals. After making his senior international debut in November 2023 against Liechtenstein, he remains a vital part of the national setup.
