His journey even took him to the German second division with the SC Bietigheim Steelers during the 2012–13 NHL lockout, an excursion that resulted in a temporary injury-related suspension from the Islanders.

On October 28, 2022, he played his 1,000th NHL game, becoming only the third player in Islanders history to reach that milestone entirely with the franchise.
