The running back who conquered the NFL without a single regular-season start
In short: In 2006, Joseph Addai achieved a statistical anomaly that redefined rookie expectations. Despite splitting time and not starting a single regular-season game, he led all rookie running backs in rushing yards. This rare feat paved the way for a Super Bowl victory and a historic rookie performance.
Joseph Addai's ascent to NFL stardom began with a remarkable 2006 season. Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round as the 30th overall pick out of Louisiana State University, he faced immediate competition from starter Dominic Rhodes. Yet, Addai managed to exceed 1,000 rushing yards—specifically 1,081—without ever being named in a starting lineup during the regular season. His journey to professional football followed a successful collegiate career at LSU. During his time with the Tigers, he finished fifth on the school's all-time rushing list.
His impact was felt immediately. On November 26, 2006, Addai set an NFL rookie record by rushing for four touchdowns in a single game against the Philadelphia Eagles, tying a Colts franchise record held by legends like Lenny Moore and Eric Dickerson. His drive continued through the playoffs, culminating in a vital touchdown against the New England Patriots during the AFC Championship, which sent the Colts to Super Bowl XLI.
By leveraging their ground game, the Colts ultimately defeated the Chicago Bears in that Super Bowl. During that championship game, Addai recorded 143 total yards, including 77 rushing yards and 10 receptions. His 10 catches in that game set a Super Bowl record for a running back, falling just one reception short of the overall record. This performance cemented his legacy as a versatile weapon capable of dominating both on the ground and through the air. Beyond his rushing prowess, he demonstrated exceptional versatility by completing a professional touchdown pass in 2009. His unique skill set earned him a Pro Bowl invitation during the 2007 season.
