In short: Few athletes overcome a string of devastating injuries to reach the pinnacle of professional football. After tearing his ACL in high school and facing subsequent knee and shoulder injuries in college, Payton Wilson emerged as one of the most decorated defenders in the nation.

Payton Wilson's path to the Pittsburgh Steelers was defined by physical resilience. A standout three-sport athlete from Hillsborough, North Carolina, Wilson's high school career at Orange High School was marked by elite production in wrestling and football, though a torn ACL during his senior year interrupted his momentum. His collegiate journey at NC State began with further adversity, as a second knee injury during his first summer training camp forced him to redshirt his true freshman season. Before his football career took flight, he was a 220-pound state wrestling champion in 2017. He also competed in lacrosse during his time at Orange High School.

Despite these setbacks, Wilson's defensive prowess became undeniable. By his redshirt sophomore season, he had earned first-team All-ACC honors. His 2023 campaign was historic; he secured both the Chuck Bednarik Award, recognizing the nation's best defensive player, and the Butkus Award, honoring the premier linebacker. He concluded his college career with career highs in several categories, including 138 total tackles and three interceptions. His dominance was reflected in his redshirt freshman year, where he led the Wolfpack with 69 tackles. He also recorded 11.5 tackles for loss during that same season.

The NFL transition saw Wilson drafted 98th overall in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. His professional debut was even tested by a pre-season injury against the Buffalo Bills, yet he remained a vital component of the Steelers' defense. During his first regular season, he recorded 64 tackles and a defensive touchdown, helping the Steelers clinch a playoff berth. By his second season, Wilson played all 17 regular-season games, recording 126 tackles and helping the Steelers secure the AFC North title. In his second professional year, he also recorded two sacks and two pass deflections. His defensive impact included a 17-yard interception return against the Colts.
