In short: Before its 2019 release, the Indian action thriller Kaappaan was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy. An aspiring screenwriter claimed the film's teaser mirrored his 2016 script, Saravedi. While the court eventually dismissed the petition, the film's journey from a fan-voted title to a box office success remains a fascinating saga.

Directed by K. V. Anand, Kaapp egently began its life under various titles. While the makers initially registered Kaappaan, Meetpaan, and Uyirkaa, they even invited fans to decide the name via a Twitter poll. Although the majority of voters chose Uyirkaa, Lyca Productions officially announced the title Kaappaan on 31 December 2018.

The production was a massive undertaking, filming across the globe from London to Indonesia's Java island. The project saw several shifts in its technical crew; for instance, the cinematographer role saw transitions from Gavemic U. Ary to Abhinandhan Ramanujam, and finally to M. S. Prabhu. The film also featured a notable casting shift when Allu Sirish was replaced by Arya due to scheduling conflicts.

The film's release was not without drama. Originally slated for 30 August 2019, the premiere was pushed to 20 September 2019 to avoid a direct clash with the film Saaho. Despite facing a plagiarism lawsuit from A. John Charles in late August, which sought a stay on the release, the Madras High Court dismissed the claim on 12 September due to a lack of evidence.

Critically, the film met with a divided reception. While it achieved significant commercial success—grossing approximately ₹100 crore worldwide and seeing a massive ₹23 crore opening weekend in Tamil Nadu—critics were less enamored. Reviews ranged from 1 star at News18 to 2.5 stars at Deccan Chronicle, with some noting the plot's wandering focus and others praising its commercial scale.
