In short: In 2015, a Tamil comedy faced a unique legal hurdle. Because its title featured the names of two industry giants, the production team had to secure official 'No Objection Certificates' just to register the name of their movie.

The film, titled 'Trisha Illana Nayanthara' (meaning 'If Not Trisha, Then Nayanthara'), was the directorial debut of Adhik Ravichandran. First announced in late December 2013, the project was intended to be a romantic comedy. Nevertheless, the name created a particular bureaucratic hurdle: since it incorporated the names of two major Tamil cinema stars, the producers needed formal permission from both Nayanthara and Trisha to register it. The production was officially confirmed in March 2014. It was originally envisioned as a romantic comedy similar to the works of Selvaraghavan.

This title modified a well-known line from the 2006 movie Thalai Nagaram, delivered by Vadivelu: 'Trisha illana Divya'. When the film was released on 17 September 2015, it was noted for its bold subject matter. While the Central Board of Film Certification gave it an 'A' (adults only) certificate, the British Board of Film Classification assigned it a 12A rating, allowing viewers under 18 to watch. The movie's release date was 17 September 2015. It was distributed globally by Studio Green after they saw the teaser.

Critical reception was varied. Some reviewers, such as those from Indo-Asian News Service, felt the film was Tamil cinema's first attempt at the sex comedy genre but was not quite as bold as its promotion suggested. Others, like The Times of India, noted the presence of innuendos and adult comedy but felt the film avoided being exploitative, instead offering moments of absurdity. The soundtrack, composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, was released by Sony Music on 4 June 2015. G. V. Prakash Kumar provided the film's musical score. The soundtrack was made available by Sony Music in early June 2015.
