From a two-star recruit to a National Champion and NFL third-round pick
In short: Kaelon Black’s journey through college football is a masterclass in resilience. After navigating knee injuries and the transfer portal, the running back helped lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a historic, undefeated regular season and a national title before entering the professional ranks.
Born in Virginia Beach on October 17, 2001, Kaelon Black did not enter the college football scene as a blue-chip prodigy. At Salem High School, he was a multi-sport athlete competing in track and field and basketball. When he committed to the James Madison Dukes, recruiting services like Rivals.com and 247Sports rated him as a two-star prospect, placing him among the top 35 players in Virginia.
Black's early collegiate career was marked by significant physical setbacks. After redshirting the 2020 season, a knee injury sustained against the Weber State Wildcats cut his 2021 campaign short. He continued to battle injuries through 2022 and 2024, but his productivity remained notable. During his 2023 season with the Dukes, he accumulated 637 rushing yards at an average of 4.5 yards per carry, even helping the team reach the Armed Forces Bowl.
A pivotal shift occurred when head coach Curt Cignetti moved from James Madison to Indiana. Black followed Cignetti to the Hoosiers, eventually forming a highly productive running back tandem with Roman Hemby. The 2025 season proved transformative; Black contributed to a perfect regular season for Indiana, highlighted by a dominant 56–3 victory over Purdue in the Old Oaken Bucket rivalry game. This momentum carried into the 2026 postseason, where Black helped Indiana secure the College Football Playoff National Championship with a 27–21 win over the Miami Hurricanes.
His collegiate success culminated in the 2020 NFL Draft, where the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the third round, 90th overall. Black made an immediate impact on the professional stage, recording a team-high 14 rushes for 65 yards during his NFL debut against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
