The volatile path of a quarterback from dismissal to championship glory
In short: Kaidon Salter’s journey to the Canadian Football League is a masterclass in athletic resilience. After a high-profile dismissal from a powerhouse program, he navigated a complex path through multiple universities, eventually leading his team to an undefeated regular season and a conference championship.
Salter's collegiate trajectory was marked by significant pivots. Originally a standout at Cedar Hill High School in Texas, he committed to the University of Tennessee. His time at the institution ended abruptly once he got kicked out of the squad due to a booking for unlicensed driving and basic possession. This setback forced a move to Liberty University, where his career underwent a dramatic transformation.
At Liberty, Salter became a cornerstone of the Flames' success. During the 2023 season, he spearheaded an offensive surge that led the team to its first undefeated regular season. His performance was highlighted by a standout Week 3 win over Buffalo, where he threw for five touchdowns, and a CUSA Championship victory where he earned MVP honors. By the end of his time at Liberty, he ranked among the program's all-time leaders in passing yards and total touchdowns.
His path continued with a move to the Colorado Buffaloes in late 2024. His time in Boulder was characterized by a rotating role, where he competed for starting spots and faced frequent benchings. Despite the challenges of a 3-9 team record, he maintained his production, eventually transitioning to the professional ranks. After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL draft, Salter signed with the BC Lions of the CFL, ultimately securing a starting role and proving his ability to adapt to new systems and leagues.
Salter's career serves as a study in the 'second act' of sports. It illustrates how a single legal and academic hurdle can redirect a trajectory, requiring a player to rebuild their reputation and production across different conferences and countries to reach the professional level.
