The automobile began as an engine strapped to a bicycle

In short: Before it was a global symbol of luxury, the Mercedes-Benz lineage started with a radical experiment in engineering. In the late 19th century, Karl Benz didn't just build a car; he fundamentally introduced the concept of the automobile by merging internal combustion with a three-wheeled frame.

The journey of Mercedes-Benz began with the mechanical ingenuity of Karl Friedrich Benz, a German engineer who founded Benz & Co. in Mannheim in 1883. Initially, the company focused on stationary internal-combustion engines. It wasn't until 1885 that Benz constructed the world’s first practical automobile powered by such an engine. This vehicle, known as the Motorwagen, was a stark departure from modern designs, featuring a three-wheeled layout that resembled a bicycle more than a contemporary car.

While Benz built the first practical model in 1885, the legal recognition of his invention followed shortly after. On January 29, 1886, he officially filed patent number 37435 for a "vehicle powered by a gas engine." This filing is widely cited as the moment the era of the automobile truly began. Following this milestone, the company expanded its capabilities, completing its first four-wheeled automobile in 1893 and producing its first series of racing cars by 1899.

The path to the modern Mercedes-Benz brand involved significant corporate evolution. By roughly 1906, Benz departed the initial enterprise to create C. He joined his offspring, Richard and Eugen, to launch Benz Söhne in Ladenburg. However, the brand's ultimate identity was forged in 1926, when the Benz company merged with its competitor, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. This merger created Daimler-Benz, the entity responsible for the Mercedes-Benz name that became synonymous with luxury and high-performance engineering.
