The pillarless grand tourer that mastered the art of heavy luxury
In short: The Mercedes-Benz C216 was more than a car; it was a masterclass in balancing physics and prestige. Weighing over two tons, it maintained a signature pillarless design while introducing revolutionary active suspension technology that reduced body roll by nearly half.
Produced between 2006 and 2014, the C216 CL-Class served as the final generation of its nameplate before being succeeded by the S-Class Coupe. Designed by Gorden Wagener and Peter Pfeiffer, the vehicle was built on the W221 S-Class chassis. Despite its massive 2,045 kg weight, it featured a full-size 116.3-inch wheelbase—shorter than the long-wheelbase S-Class but optimized for the specific proportions of a luxury 2+2 coupé. A key design hallmark was its pillarless construction, which eliminated the B-pillar between front and rear windows to create an uninterrupted glass profile.
The C216 was a pioneer in active safety and dynamics. It debuted Pre-Safe Brake, providing partial autonomous braking of up to 0.4g when severe danger was detected. The vehicle featured Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, allowing for full stops and subsequent acceleration. For handling, it featured the second generation Active Body Control (ABC II). This system utilized shorter hydraulic lines and a redesigned pulsation damper to reduce body roll by 45% compared to previous generations, offering a level of stability that defined its 'grand tourer' identity.
The model also served as a canvas for significant milestones. It hosted the 'Trademark Centenary' in 2009, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Mercedes star and Benz emblem registered in 1909. For performance enthusiasts, the CL 65 AMG offered a massive 612 PS (604 hp) output and specialized components like cross-drilled brake discs and forged 20-inch wheels. By 2011, it also became the first series production car to feature night vision-guided pedestrian spotlighting, highlighting its role as a laboratory for high-end automotive innovation.
