In short: Imagine a luxury coupé so aerodynamic it achieved a drag coefficient of 0.28, yet remained structurally sound without a B-pillar. The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class (C215) balanced this aesthetic dream with a high-tech hydropneumatic suspension that could level the car during high-speed cornering.

Manufactured between 1998 and 2006, the C215 served as Mercedes-Benz's flagship two-door coupé. It was built on a shortened wheelbase of the W220 S-Class, utilizing a sophisticated unibody construction. This included a steel floor pan and chassis rails paired with a bonded aluminium roof, magnesium door frames, and composite plastics for the front wings and trunk.

The vehicle was a pioneer in automotive technology. It was the first car globally to feature Bi-Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlamps and the second car to utilize Distronic, a radar-assisted autonomous cruise control system. A pillarless layout was employed to preserve its smooth shape, ensuring the absence of a B-pillar separating the side windows at the front and back.

Performance was managed by the Active Body Control (ABC) hydropneumatic suspension. This system kept the vehicle level during fast turns and allowed drivers to adjust ground clearance in three increments for difficult terrain. For the high-performance models, such as the CL 65 AMG with its 6.0 litre Bi-Turbo V12, the engineering focused on seamless power delivery and advanced safety, including the 2003 introduction of the Pre-Safe precrash system.

The CL-Class also balanced extreme luxury with mechanical nuance. For example, the V12 engines from 1999 to 2003 featured Active Cylinder Control to improve fuel economy. This system was so precise that it mechanically uncoupled exhaust valves using two solenoids to prevent oil from entering the cylinders when they were deactivated, ensuring a seamless transition for the driver.
