From bus assistant to European champion: the relentless rise of Carlos Bacca
In short: Before signing for €30 million, Carlos Bacca worked as a bus driver's assistant to support his family. Today, the Colombian striker is a decorated veteran known for his clinical finishing and an ability to thrive even when tactical shifts force him into deeper, less traditional roles.
Born in Puerto Colombia in 1986, Bacca's journey to professional football was defined by economic necessity. This determination eventually translated into a prolific scoring record, leading to a breakout period in Colombia where he secured multiple league titles and top-scorer honors.
His move to Europe saw a rapid ascent. Following a productive period at Club Brugge, during which he finished as the Belgian Pro League's leading marksman in his sole complete campaign, he moved to Sevilla for €7 million in 2013. At Sevilla, Bacca's game evolved under manager Unai Emery; he improved his work rate and defensive contribution, often dropping into midfield to link play, yet he maintained a consistent scoring record.
Bacca's career is marked by significant high-stakes moments. He won the UEFA Europa League in his first two seasons with Sevilla, including a brace in the 2015 final. In 2015, he moved to AC Milan for €30 million. While his time in Italy saw criticism regarding his limited movement off the ball and defensive contribution, he remained a potent threat, once scoring a hat-trick against Torino.
On the international stage, Bacca has been a mainstay for Colombia from 2012 to 2018. He represented his country at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups and helped the team secure a third-place finish in the Copa América Centenario. His career trajectory—from a struggling professional to a multi-club star—exemplifies the grit required to reach the summit of European football.
