From New Orleans public housing to the NBA's elite ranks
In short: Before becoming a versatile professional basketball player, Kelly Oubre Jr. navigated the Magnolia public housing project in New Orleans. His journey from the impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to a high-stakes career in the NBA is a testament to resilience and the unpredictable nature of professional sports.
Born on December 9, 1995, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Kelly Oubre Jr. grew up in the Magnolia public housing project before his family relocated to the Eastover section. The trajectory of his life shifted significantly in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina forced his family to move to Richmond, Texas. It was there that he attended George Bush High School before transferring to Findlay Prep in Nevada to complete his senior season.
Oubre's ascent through the basketball ranks was rapid. After playing for the Kansas Jayhawks during the 2014–15 season—where he averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds—he declared for the NBA draft on April 1, 2015. He was selected 15th overall by the Atlanta Hawks, though his rights were immediately traded to the Washington Wizards. Over the following years, he became a known '3 and D' player, showcasing his versatility across multiple franchises including the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and Charlotte Hornets.
His career has been marked by both high-scoring milestones and physical adversity. He has recorded career-highs of 40 points for the Warriors and 39 points for the Suns. Beyond the court, Oubre has faced significant challenges, including a meniscus tear in 2020 and a serious hit-and-run accident in Philadelphia in November 2023, which left him with a fractured rib and other injuries. Despite these setbacks, he has continued to secure significant professional contracts, most recently signing a two-year, $17 million deal with the Indiana Pacers in July 2026.
