The 6'10" point guard who transformed from a Canadian standout to an NBA veteran
In short: Before he was a fixture in the NBA, Kelly Olynyk was a Canadian point guard. A massive growth spurt in grade 11 changed his physical profile, but his versatile skill set allowed him to navigate a decade of trades, injuries, and championship runs across the globe.
Born in Toronto in 1991, Olynyk’s basketball roots trace back to the Scarborough Blues, a rep team that was nearly undefeated in the late 1990s. His path to the pros was unconventional; rather than attending a U.S. prep school, he stayed in British Columbia, playing for South Kamloops Secondary School. During his eleventh-grade year, a significant growth spurt saw him rise from 6'3" to 6'10", yet he maintained the skills of a guard.
His collegiate career at Gonzaga was marked by strategic patience. After playing limited minutes in his first two years, Olynyk redshirted the 2011–12 season to build strength. The gamble paid off: he returned for the 2012–13 season as a Consensus First-Team All-American. By the time he entered the 2013 NBA draft, he had already earned a bachelor's degree in accounting.
Olylar's professional journey is a masterclass in the NBA's movement-heavy ecosystem. Drafted 13th overall by the Dallas Mavericks and immediately traded to the Boston Celtics, he became a versatile piece for several franchises. He reached the Eastern Conference Finals with Boston in 2017 and the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat in 2020. His career has seen him suit up for the Rockets, Pistons, Jazz, Raptors, Pelicans, and Spurs, eventually moving to BC Roma in Italy.
Beyond the court, Olynyk's basketball lineage is deep. His father, Ken, coached the Canadian junior men's national team and famously cut a young Steve Nash from the roster. His mother, Arlene, was the Toronto Raptors' first female scorekeeper. Today, Kelly continues to lead, having been named captain of the Canadian men's national team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
