In short: Kelvin Sampson’s career has been defined by extreme highs and deep controversies. After being forced to resign from Indiana following major NCAA violations and a five-year show-cause penalty, he returned to the collegiate ranks to lead the Houston Cougars to unprecedented success.

Sampson’s tenure at Indiana University ended abruptly on February 22, 2008. Following an investigation into major rules violations—including impermissible recruiting calls and allegations that he lied to officials—Sampson resigned with a $750,000 settlement. This departure followed a period where he had already been restricted by the NCAA due to investigations at Oklahoma, which had cited over 550 impermissible calls to 17 different recruits. His previous stint at Oklahoma had also been marred by investigations into recruiting misconduct. The NCAA had previously barred him from making off-campus recruiting calls for a year.

After serving a five-year show-cause penalty, Sampson returned to the NCAA in 2014 as the head coach for the University of Houston. During his subsequent college tenure, he drove major programme expansion, playing a key part in securing $25 million for a 2016 practice centre and $60 million to remodel the Hofheinz Pavilion—now the Fertitta Center—in 2018. He was instrumental in the school's efforts to raise significant funds for these facilities. These renovations helped modernize the program's infrastructure.

His success at Houston has been historic. In 2021, he led the Cougars to their first conference tournament crown since 2010 and reached the Final Four for the first time since 1984. In 2025, his team achieved a stunning 70–67 upset over Duke in the tournament before ultimately losing to Florida in the championship game. The team entered the 2025 tournament as a top seed. This run marked a significant resurgence for the program.
