The relentless scoring machine who rewrote the Charlotte Hornets record books
In short: From a college championship hero to an NBA scoring leader, Kemba Walker’s career was defined by clutch moments and unprecedented offensive outbursts. Discover how one point guard climbed the franchise ranks to surpass legends and set records that still stand in Charlotte.
Kemba Walker’s ascent to professional stardom began with a legendary run at the University of Connecticut. During the 2010–11 season, Walker emerged as the nation's second-leading scorer, averaging 26.7 points per game during his junior campaign. He led the Huskies to a 2011 NCAA championship victory, earning both the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard.
Upon entering the 2011 NBA draft, Walker was selected ninth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats. His tenure in Charlotte was marked by prolific scoring and a knack for buzzer-beaters. He famously hit a game-winning three-pointer to force overtime in the Hornets' 2014 season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. During 2016, he achieved a club-best 52 points during a double-overtime victory over Utah, beating the 48-point record established by Glen Rice in 1997.
Walker’s impact on the franchise's history is quantifiable through several milestones. He eventually became the Charlotte franchise's career scoring leader, surpassing Dell Curry. He also broke the team record for three-pointers, reaching 930 to overtake Curry's 929. Beyond scoring, he achieved the most starts in franchise history with 502, moving past the legendary Muggsy Bogues. Despite facing knee surgeries in 2015, 2016, and 2017, Walker remained a four-time NBA All-Star and a cornerstone of the organization.
By the end of his time in Charlotte, Walker had achieved the rare feat of scoring 10,000 career points with the franchise, cementing his legacy as one of the most dominant offensive forces in the team's history.
