In short: Kenneth Gainwell’s journey from a versatile high school quarterback to a professional running back is defined by rapid adaptation. After a standout collegiate career at Memphis, he transitioned to the NFL, eventually contributing to championship-level success and securing significant contracts in the league.

Born on March 14, 1999, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Gainwell’s path to professional football was shaped by his versatility. Playing for Yazoo County High School, he started three seasons at quarterback and proved to be a versatile dual-threat player. During his senior season, he amassed 1,139 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, while adding 1,834 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. This prolific performance earned him the Class 3A Mr. Football title as he led his team to a 14–1 record and a state championship appearance.

His transition to running back occurred during his time at the University of Memphis. After rushing for 1,459 yards and 13 touchdowns, he earned first-team All-AAC honours and AAC Freshman of the Year as a redshirt freshman. His college years featured major awards, such as the Shaun Alexander Award and being named the Football Writers Association of America's National Freshman of the Year. However, his final college season was cut short when he opted out six days before the opener due to multiple family deaths from COVID-19.

In the NFL, Gainwell was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. He proved vital in the playoffs, running for 112 yards and a touchdown during the Eagles' 38–7 Divisional Round win against the New York Giants. This feat made him the sixth player in Eagles history to record 100+ rushing yards in a postseason match. After playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and winning Super Bowl LIX with the Chiefs, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 13, 2026, via a two-year, $14 million deal.
