The remarkably consistent left-back who once missed just one league game
In short: Before the era of high-priced transfers, Kenny Sansom was a model of reliability. From his beginnings in London's South End to becoming one of England's most capped full-backs, his career was defined by an extraordinary ability to stay on the pitch through grueling seasons.
Born in Camberwell in 1958, Sansom’s journey to professional football was far from certain. After initially considering a career as a goalkeeper, a youth match for the Spring Park Wolves saw him replace an injured teammate at left-back—a position he would hold for the rest of his career. His rise was rapid; by 1977, he was captaining the Crystal Palace junior team to FA Youth Cup success while simultaneously skippering the England youth team.
His move to Arsenal in 1980 for £1 million—an exchange involving striker Clive Allen—marked the beginning of a highly consistent era. During his six seasons at Highbury, Sansom missed only seven games in all competitions. He was a mainstay for both club and country, earning 86 caps for England between 1979 and 1988. Notably, he held a record for the most consecutive appearances for England, playing 37 matches in a row between 1984 and 1987.
Despite his individual consistency, Sansom's career was not without hardship. He faced significant personal struggles, including battles with alcoholism and gambling addiction, which at one point led to homelessness. In 2020, it was revealed he had been diagnosed with Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome, a type of dementia. Today, he is remembered as one of the most decorated full-backs in English history, holding the distinction of being England's second-most capped player in that position.
His legacy is etched in the record books: he is one of only eleven players to earn more than 85 caps for England, joining the ranks of legends like Bobby Moore and David Beckham. Even as his playing days ended, his influence remained, from his time as a tour guide at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium to his work as a football analyst.
