From a 2015 prospect to a two-time Silver Slugger winner
In short: William Contreras didn't just join the elite ranks of Major League Baseball; he mastered the grueling role of a catcher while navigating a high-profile trade. His journey from a Venezuelan international free agent to an MVP finalist highlights a rare evolution of defensive grit and offensive power.
During February 2015, the Atlanta Braves acquired Contreras via an international free agent agreement. His path to the majors was a steady climb through the minor league system, beginning with the DSL Braves in 2015. He spent years refining his craft in various leagues, including the GCL Braves, Danville Braves, and the Florida Fire Frogs, before being added to the Braves' 40-man roster in 2019 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. His breakthrough arrived on July 24, 2020, when he made his major league debut as a backup catcher. He quickly became a vital component of the Braves' success, contributing to their 2021 World Series championship—the franchise's first title since 1995. During that season, he hit his first career home run on May 5, 2021, and helped the team clinch the NL East. In December 2022, a three-team trade sent Contreras to the Milwaukee Brewers. This move proved to be a career catalyst. In 2023, he won his first Silver Slugger Award and finished 11th in NL MVP voting. By 2024, he secured a second Silver Slugger and finished 5th in MVP voting, becoming the first Brewer to reach the top five since 2019. Despite a fractured finger in 2025, he remained a core contributor, helping the Brewers clinch the NL Central.
