In short: Matt Schaub’s career is a study in resilience. After a shoulder injury derailed his senior season at the University of Virginia, he transformed into a prolific NFL starter, eventually leading the Houston Texans to their first winning season and setting historic single-game passing records.

Schaub's ascent began at the University of Virginia, where he became a standout performer. After splitting duties in 2001, he had a breakout 2002 season, throwing for 2,976 yards and 28 touchdowns to earn ACC Player of the Year honors. Despite being a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate in 2003, a shoulder injury in the opening game significantly impacted his senior statistics.

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Schaub during the 2004 NFL draft, choosing him as the 90th pick in the third round. He spent three seasons as a backup before being traded to the Houston Texans in 2007. This move proved transformative; he became the Texans' long-term starter, leading the team to its first .500 season (8–8) in 2007 and its first winning season (9–7) in 2009.

His statistical peak arrived in 2009, when he led the NFL in passing yards (4,770), completions (396), and yards per game (298). He also earned a Pro Bowl selection that year. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012, he recorded a personal best of 527 passing yards, matching Hall of Famer Warren Moon for the second-highest single-game total in NFL history.

Beyond his playing days, Schaub transitioned into coaching. Following stints as a backup for the Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, and a return to the Falcons, he began coaching in 2023 as an analyst for Atlanta. By 2026, he was hired as the quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals.
