The linebacker who refused to become a 'designated pass rusher'
In short: Kevin Greene dominated the NFL for 15 years, racking up 160 career sacks. Yet, he often chose to play complex roles over pure pass rushing. By embracing coverage responsibilities in a 3–4 defense, he became one of the most versatile and durable linebackers in football history.
Born an 'army brat' in Schenectady, New York, Kevin Greene's path to the NFL was defined by versatility. After playing football on military bases and attending Auburn University—where he was a three-time All-Pro and won the Zeke Smith Award—Greene entered the league in 1985. He spent his early career with the Los Angeles Rams, where he became a staple of Fritz Shurmur's 'Eagle 5-Linebacker' defense. This system allowed him to excel as a left outside linebacker, a role that required a balance of power and technique.
Greene’s career was marked by a unique tactical evolution. In 1991, a shift to a 4–3 defense by the Rams initially hindered his production, as he was moved to unfamiliar positions. However, he successfully adapted, later signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1993 to return to the 3–4 system he preferred. There, he formed the 'Salt & Pepper' duo with Greg Lloyd. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, the defense allowed a league-best 3.48 yards per rush, with Greene described by coach Dick LeBeau as 'almost unblockable.'
What distinguishes Greene from many modern 'pass rushers' is his commitment to the linebacker role. He often noted that his numbers were impressive despite having significant coverage responsibilities. He retired in 1999 while still playing at a high level, choosing not to transition into a specialized role that would sacrifice his defensive utility. He finished his career as the NFL's all-time sack leader among linebackers, surpassing legends like Lawrence Taylor and Derrick Thomas.
