How a rugby legend turned endurance into a multimillion-pound lifeline
In short: Sir Kevin Sinfield is one of the most decorated players in Super League history, but his greatest achievement happened after he hung up his boots. Through a series of grueling endurance challenges, he has transformed his athletic legacy into a massive fundraising engine for motor neurone disease research.
Born in Oldham in 1980, Sinfield established himself as a premier rugby league talent, playing for the Leeds Rhinos, England, and Great Britain. His professional career was defined by record-breaking consistency; he became the highest points-scorer in Super League history and holds the record for scoring in 63 consecutive matches. His leadership was equally unmatched, as he became the first player to captain four championship-winning teams and is one of only two players to lead a side to three consecutive Super League titles.
However, Sinfield's most profound impact emerged from his commitment to fighting motor neurone disease (MND). Following the diagnosis of former teammate Rob Burrow, Sinfield launched a series of extraordinary physical feats. In November 2020, he embarked on a mission to run seven marathons in seven days. While his initial goal was to raise £77,777, the public response was overwhelming. By the time he finished his seventh marathon on 7 December, the total raised had surpassed £2 million, with £500,000 specifically earmarked for research projects.
He has since continued this momentum through even more demanding challenges, including a 101-mile run in under 24 hours and a series of seven ultramarathons. These efforts have collectively raised nearly £10 million for MND-related causes. In recognition of his sporting excellence and his monumental charitable work, he was knighted in 2026, becoming only the second rugby league player to receive the honor. Today, he continues to serve the sport as a high-level coach for the England national rugby union team.
