How a highly-touted NFL prospect navigated a career defined by persistent physical setbacks
In short: Kevin White entered the 2015 NFL draft as one of the league's most promising wide receiver prospects. Yet, his professional journey became a grueling test of resilience as recurring injuries sidelined him for significant portions of his early career, forcing him to constantly fight for a spot on active rosters.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1992, Kevin White rose to prominence as a standout wide receiver at West Virginia University. His 2014 senior season was particularly impressive, featuring 109 receptions for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning him All-American honors and status as a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. Alongside Amari Cooper, White was widely considered one of the two premier wide receivers in the 2015 draft class, leading the Chicago Bears to select him seventh overall.
The trajectory of his professional career shifted dramatically during his rookie year. While participating in off-season activities, White suffered a stress fracture in his shin that necessitated the insertion of a steel rod into his left tibia. This injury kept him off the field for the entirety of his first season. The pattern of misfortune continued in 2016 when he fractured his fibula in the same leg, and again in 2017 when he fractured his left shoulder blade during the season opener. These consecutive injuries placed him on injured reserve for three straight years, severely limiting his development with the Bears.
Following his departure from Chicago, White spent several years navigating the league as a practice squad player and reserve, with stints at the Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, and New Orleans Saints. Despite the physical toll, he continued to compete, recording notable moments such as a 64-yard reception in 2022. His journey reflects the volatility of professional sports, where immense collegiate success does not always guarantee a smooth transition to the NFL. Throughout this period, his brothers Ka'Raun and Kyzir also pursued football, with Kyzir eventually reaching the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022.
