How a cold email and a youth league match launched a professional goalkeeping career
In short: Kevin Trapp’s path to professional football began not with a scout’s invitation, but with a proactive email. After being rejected by 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he persisted, eventually catching their attention during a youth match. That determination propelled him through top-tier leagues in Germany and France, defining a career marked by resilience.
Born in Merzig, West Germany, in 1990, Kevin Trapp’s early development took him through several local clubs, including FC Brotdorf and SSV Bachem. His breakthrough came after he independently contacted 1. FC Kaiserslautern to request a trial. Although initially turned away, he was invited to train a year later. His performance during a youth match against the club proved decisive, leading to his first professional contract in 2009. By 2011, he had established himself in the Bundesliga, though he faced significant challenges, including a shoulder injury and his team's eventual relegation in 2012.
Trapp’s career reached new heights at Eintracht Frankfurt and later at Paris Saint-Germain. In 2015, he moved to the French capital for an estimated 10 million euros, where he secured a domestic quadruple. Despite high-profile setbacks—such as the dramatic 2017 Champions League exit against Barcelona—Trapp remained a formidable presence. He returned to Frankfurt in 2018, initially on loan before signing a permanent deal in 2019. His tenure there culminated in a historic 2022 UEFA Europa League victory, where his late-game heroics, including a crucial save against Ryan Kent and a penalty stop against Aaron Ramsey, secured the trophy.
Beyond his club success, Trapp has been a consistent figure in the German national setup. He earned his first senior cap in June 2017 and was part of the squad that triumphed at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. His international experience includes participation in the 2018 World Cup, the delayed UEFA European Championship held in 2021, and the 2022 World Cup. Fluent in six languages, Trapp’s career reflects a blend of technical skill and adaptability, moving from his roots in the Saarland region to the highest stages of European football, eventually joining Paris FC in 2025.
