In short: From a record-breaking $30 million contract to a sudden dismissal, Kevin Sumlin’s career has been defined by explosive offensive brilliance and equally dramatic exits. Discover how one man helped revolutionize the spread offense before navigating the volatile world of elite college football.

Kevin Sumlin’s coaching legacy is anchored by his ability to orchestrate high-scoring, historic offenses. During his tenure at Texas A&M from 2012 to 2017, he led the Aggies to an unprecedented season in 2012, where the team became the first in SEC history to surpass 7,000 yards of total offense. That year, under his guidance, quarterback Johnny Manziel secured the Heisman Trophy, and the team achieved an 11–2 record, including landmark victories over Alabama and Oklahoma. His offensive mastery was evident even earlier, as his Oklahoma squads averaged 44 points per game. He also played a pivotal role in modernizing the game at Purdue, where he helped implement the spread offense alongside Jim Chaney.

However, Sumlin’s career has been marked by significant financial and professional volatility. In 2013, he signed a massive, guaranteed six-year, $30 million contract with Texas A&M. The deal included staggering buyout clauses, such as a $20 million payout if terminated after 2015. Despite his offensive prowess, his time at A&M ended in 2017 with a 51–26 record, and he was eventually replaced by Jimbo Fisher. The financial weight of his departure was immense, as the university was required to pay his $10.4 million buyout within 60 days of his termination.

The downward trajectory continued through several high-profile roles. After a stint at the University of Arizona, which ended abruptly following a 70–7 loss to Arizona State in 2020, Sumlin moved into professional leagues with the Houston Gamblers. Most recently, his role as associate head coach at the University of Maryland ended following his dismissal in 2024, a move precipitated by off-field legal challenges involving DUI charges. Before his time in the professional leagues, Sumlin's coaching journey included stints at Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Purdue.
