From a single scholarship offer to backflipping into the NFL history books
In short: Born on August 9, 1996, Khalen Saunders defied the odds to become a professional defensive tackle. Despite receiving only one Division I scholarship offer out of high school, his unique athleticism and versatility propelled him from Western Illinois to multiple Super Bowl victories and a career across several NFL franchises.
Khalen Saunders began his journey at Parkway Central High School, where he played both running back and defensive line. His path to the professional level was unconventional; he received only one Division I scholarship offer, which came from Western Illinois. During his time there, he showcased rare versatility by playing defensive line while occasionally contributing on offense, where he recorded both a rushing and a receiving touchdown. His breakout moment occurred at the Senior Bowl, where he became the first Leatherneck ever invited to the game and recorded the contest's opening sack against Will Grier.
His draft stock surged after a video of him performing a backflip went viral on social media, garnering over 7,000 likes on a post by Adam Schefter. In 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the third round with the 84th overall pick. Saunders quickly proved his value, contributing to two Super Bowl championships: Super Bowl LIV, where the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20, and Super Bowl LVII, where he recorded two tackles and a sack in a 38–35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Beyond his own career, Saunders is linked to a notable cultural moment through his brother, Kameron, a professional dancer and choreographer. When it was revealed that Khalen had purchased a plane ticket to help Kameron reach an audition for Taylor Swift's The Eras tour, fans donated over $20,000 to Kameron's charity, The Original Element Foundation. Throughout his professional career, Saunders has navigated various challenges, including stints on injured reserve and transitions between teams such as the New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans, ultimately recording his first career interception against Patrick Mahomes in 2024.
