From Illinois high school standout to the professional stage of the National Football League
In short: Born in 2003, Athan Kaliakmanis navigated a collegiate career spanning Minnesota and Rutgers before reaching the NFL. His journey, marked by high-stakes relief appearances and a transition to the Washington Commanders, highlights the unpredictable path of a modern quarterback rising through the ranks of American professional football.
Athan Kaliakmanis, a Greek American athlete named after Athanasius of Alexandria, emerged from Antioch, Illinois, as a standout high school player. In 2021, his performance earned him the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year title, a season defined by 1,158 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. This early success led him to the University of Minnesota, where he began his college career as a redshirt freshman before stepping into the starting role during his sophomore year.
His collegiate tenure was defined by adaptability. After stepping in for injured starters at Minnesota, he secured notable wins and eventually became the team's primary quarterback in 2023. By January 2024, he transferred to Rutgers University, reuniting with his brother, Dino. This period of transition prepared him for the 2026 NFL draft, where the Washington Commanders selected him in the seventh round with the 223rd overall pick.
The transition to professional play arrived quickly. After signing a four-year rookie contract in May 2026, Kaliakmanis made his preseason debut that August. His regular-season opportunity came on October 4, 2026, during a game against the Indianapolis Colts. Filling in for injured teammates Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota, he recorded his first NFL touchdown—a 47-yard pass to Treylon Burks—finishing the game with 186 passing yards. This debut marked the latest chapter in a career defined by stepping into the spotlight when circumstances demand it.
