How a box office failure became a cult masterpiece of Telugu cinema
In short: In 2010, Khaleja premiered to mixed reviews and a disappointing commercial run. Yet, over a decade later, it has undergone a radical critical re-evaluation. It is now celebrated as a high-water mark for Mahesh Babu’s career, proving that cinematic legacy isn't always decided by opening weekend numbers.
Released on October 7, 2010, Khaleja was intended to be a major return for actor Mahesh Babu after a three-year hiatus. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the film blended fantasy, action, and comedy. Despite its high production value and critical praise for Babu's screen presence, it struggled at the box office. After generating roughly ₹4.18 crore for distributors during its initial Andhra Pradesh debut, the movie's intake plummeted to ₹11.2 crore within seven days, reaching a final sum of nearly ₹18.08 crore.
The commercial disappointment is often attributed to a mismatch between marketing and content; audiences expected a 'mass entertainer' while receiving a comedy with a devotional angle. However, the film's narrative—centered on a taxi driver who becomes a prophesied savior against an industrialist poisoning a village for Iridium deposits—has since gained a devoted cult following. Film Companion featured this title among their '25 Greatest Telugu Films of the Decade' selection.
The film's enduring status was cemented by its recent cultural resurgence. In May 2025, it saw a special theatrical re-release to honor the birthday of legendary actor Krishna. This event marked a milestone in Telugu cinema as the first time a re-released film hosted premiere shows on multiple days (starting May 29). The re-release was a massive success, grossing ₹13 crore and confirming its transition from a commercial flop to a beloved classic.
