From reality show dropout to international star: The career of actor Kim Bum
In short: Born in Seoul in 1989, Kim Bum rose from a teenage reality show contestant to a prominent figure in South Korean television and film. Known for his versatility in dramas ranging from fantasy to legal thrillers, his career spans over a decade of high-profile roles and international projects.
Kim Sang-bum, professionally known as Kim Bum, began his journey in the entertainment industry through the Survival Star Audition. Although he placed sixth, his age prevented him from continuing in the competition. Despite this early setback, the exposure provided him with opportunities that led to his acting debut in the sitcom High Kick!. He gained significant recognition for his performance in the drama East of Eden, but it was his role as So Yi-jung in the 2009 hit Boys Over Flowers that propelled him to widespread prominence.
His career is marked by a willingness to explore diverse genres. He has appeared in fantasy dramas like Tale of the Nine Tailed, crime thrillers such as Mrs. Cop 2, and legal dramas like Law School. Beyond South Korea, Kim expanded his reach into Chinese cinema and television, starring in projects like Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon and the Chinese version of Gossip Girl, titled V Love. His commitment to his craft has occasionally come at a physical cost; in 2012, his agency reported he suffered from degenerative arthritis following intense weight-loss training for the drama Padam Padam.
Throughout his career, Kim has balanced acting with other ventures, including music and brand ambassadorships. He released his first studio album, Hometown, in 2012 and held his first solo concert in Tokyo that same year. His professional path also included a hiatus for military service, which began in 2018 and concluded in 2020. Today, he remains a recognizable face in both Korean and international media, continuing to take on complex roles that challenge his range as a performer.
