From survival show contestant to actress: the career evolution of Jang Gyu-ri
In short: Born in Seoul in 1997, Jang Gyu-ri navigated the intense world of South Korean idol survival programs before pivoting to a successful acting career. Her journey from a ninth-place finish on Idol School to starring in major television dramas illustrates the fluid nature of modern entertainment industry transitions.
Jang Gyu-ri began her public career in 2017, making a cameo appearance in the KBS drama Ms. Perfect before joining the Mnet reality-survival program Idol School. Her performance in the show's finale on September 29, 2017, secured her a ninth-place finish, which earned her a spot in the girl group Fromis 9. She debuted with the group in January 2018 with the EP To. Heart. Her early years were marked by a commitment to self-improvement, including her participation in the 2018 program Produce 48, where she represented Stone Music Entertainment before returning to Fromis 9 after finishing in 25th place.
The transition toward acting began in 2019 with her role in the web drama Dating Class. Her profile rose significantly in 2020 following her appearance in the tvN series It's Okay to Not Be Okay. This shift became permanent in July 2022, when Jang departed from Fromis 9. She opted not to sign a new contract with Pledis Entertainment, choosing instead to honor the terms of her original agreement with CJ E&M. Following her departure, she quickly secured a role in the SBS series Cheer Up and signed an exclusive contract with Just Entertainment in August 2022.
Jang's career continued to evolve as she moved between agencies. After her contract with Just Entertainment expired in June 2024, she signed with Namoo Actors in September of the same year. Her recent work includes a role in the MBC television series When the Phone Rings, where her performance garnered critical praise. Throughout her career, Jang has balanced formal training, having majored in acting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, with the practical experience gained through high-pressure reality television and professional acting projects.
