How a semi-professional midfielder became a top-flight football manager
In short: Kim Hellberg realized early in his youth that he lacked the talent to become a professional player. Instead of walking away from the game, he pivoted to the sidelines, transforming a career in the Swedish lower divisions into a rapid ascent to the English Championship.
Born in Norrköping in 1988, Hellberg’s footballing roots were planted in the grassroots scene at Smedby AIS. While his playing days were spent in the amateur and semi-professional tiers—reaching a peak in Division 3—his true trajectory began in 2011. At just 23 years old, he took charge of Kimstad GoIF, securing a Division 5 title in his very first season.
His coaching progression was remarkably swift. After leading Kuddby IF from the fifth tier to the third tier in three seasons, he moved into the Allsvenskan as an assistant at IFK Norrköping in 2020. By late 2021, he secured his first top-flight head coaching role with IFK Värnamo. There, he achieved a surprising 10th-place finish in 2022 and a 5th-place finish in 2023, earning a nomination for Manager of the Year.
Hellberg’s tactical identity is heavily influenced by masters of the game like Marcelo Bielsa, Pep Guardiola, and Jürgen Klopp. He favors a high-intensity, possession-based system, often utilizing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formations to dominate play through aggressive pressing. This philosophy led Hammarby IF to back-to-back runners-up finishes in the Swedish top flight during 202 and 2025.
In November 2025, Hellberg transitioned to English football, joining Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship. His arrival was marked by an immediate impact, equaling a club record by winning his first four matches. Despite a turbulent season involving a promotion play-off semi-final controversy known as 'Spygate,' Hellberg has established himself as a significant figure in modern tactical management.
