In short: Before becoming a powerhouse of Australian comedy, Kitty Flanagan was a physical education teacher and a crayfish factory worker. Her journey from an advertising copywriter fired in 1993 to a multi-award-winning creator and star of Fisk is a masterclass in comedic reinvention.

Kitty Flanagan's career trajectory is marked by significant shifts. After a five-year stint as an advertising agency copywriter, which ended in June 1993, she transitioned to the hospitality industry. It was while working as a bartender at a hotel with an open mic night that she decided to attempt stand-up comedy. Her debut at the Harold Park Hotel in Sydney was an immediate success, earning her third place in a local competition and a bottle of red wine.

Her talent was quickly recognized; by December 1994, she was spotted by a producer from the show Full Frontal, leading to a role as a writer and performer in 1995. This momentum carried her to the United Kingdom in 2001, where she spent eight years performing globally, including at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Montreal's Just For Laughs. During this period, she contributed to various BBC, Channel Four, and Sky Television productions.

In recent years, Flanagan has become a central figure in Australian television. She co-created, co-wrote, and co-directed the hit sitcom Fisk, which aired on ABC TV in March 2021. The series has been a critical and commercial triumph, winning multiple AACTA Awards and securing Flanagan consecutive Silver Logie awards for her performance in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Her versatility is further evidenced by her work on Utopia, The Project, and The Weekly with Charlie Pickering.
