In short: In the 2011 political thriller Ko, a freelance photographer's pursuit of a story leads him into a web of Naxalite robberies and election-day treachery. What begins as a quest for the truth reveals a chilling alliance between political ambition and criminal chaos.

Directed by K. V. Anand, Ko is a Tamil-language action thriller inspired by the director's own early career as a freelance photojournalist. The narrative follows Ashwin Kumar, a photographer for the newspaper Dina Anjal, who becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving Naxalites and a deceptive political campaign during the Tamil Nadu State Election. The story was developed alongside writer Subha after the director spent six months refining the script. This project was inspired by Anand's professional background working for various publications like India Today and Kalki.

The plot centers on Vasanthan Perumal, a graduate striving to enter politics through his team, Siragugal. While Vasanthan appears to be a clean candidate fighting against bribery, Ashwin discovers a dark reality: Vasanthan has orchestrated events, including a bomb blast, to gain public sympathy. He even forms a tactical deal with Naxalite leader Kadhir to secure his victory. Ashwin's investigation reveals that the candidate's team, Siragugal, actually conspired with criminals to manipulate the electorate. This treachery is further exposed when the protagonist discovers the leader of the bank robbery is working alongside the politician.

The film's production was notable for its international scale and technical ambition. It was the first Tamil film to be shot in Norway, with song sequences filmed in locations like Trolltunga and Bergen. Additionally, the production utilized a Phantom Flex camera—a technology previously used for Spider-Man (2002)—to capture high-definition action at 2,500 frames per second. Beyond Norway, the production team travelled to Harbin, China, to film sequences during a major ice festival. They also captured footage in several Indian locations, including Madurai, Puducherry, and Bengaluru.

Released on 22 April 2011, the film was a commercial success, earning multiple accolades including four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. It was later remade in Bengali as Kanamachi in 2013, and a standalone sequel, Ko 2, was released in 2016. The movie achieved significant popularity in Tamil Nadu, marking a major milestone for lead actor Jiiva. It also reached wider audiences through a Telugu dubbed version titled Rangam.
