The meteoric rise of sumo's newest 75th yokozuna
In short: In just a few years, a university standout transformed from an amateur champion into the sport's highest rank. Following a record-breaking professional ascent, Ōnosato Daiki has bypassed decades of traditional progression, proving that even in a sport defined by ancient stability, a new era of dominance can arrive with startling speed.
Born Daiki Nakamura in 2000, the wrestler known as Ōnosato Daiki entered the professional ranks with unprecedented momentum. Utilizing the 'makushita tsukedashi' system—a pathway for elite amateurs—he joined the Nishonoseki stable in 2023 under the guidance of former yokozuna Kisenosato. His amateur pedigree was immense; during his time at Nippon Sport Science University, he secured at least 13 titles, including a freshman victory at the National Student Sumo Tournament, the first such feat in 29 years.
His professional trajectory was equally historic. After debuting at the makushita 10 rank, he reached the top makuuchi division by January 202<0xC2>4, the third-fastest ascent since 1989. His ascent to komusubi in May 2024 represented his entry into the san'yaku, the quickest rise to such positions since the Shōwa period. This rapid rise was punctuated by a record-breaking seven tournaments to secure his first top-division championship in May 2024.
The path to the top was not without friction. In April 2024, the Japan Sumo Association issued a strict warning to both Ōnosato and his stablemaster following an incident in September 2023 involving drinking with an underage wrestler. Despite this setback, his technical prowess remained undeniable. Columnists have compared his 'calm smooth style' to the legendary Hakuhō, and his promotion to the 75th yokozuna in May 2025 followed back-to-back championships at the ōzeki rank, cementing his place as a modern titan of the ring.
