The record-breaking tight end who rewrote the NFL draft history books
In short: In 2021, a single player changed the expectations for his position forever. By becoming the highest-drafted tight end in the history of the league, Kyle Pitts arrived with unprecedented pressure and the statistical talent to meet it.
Kyle Pitts entered the NFL via the 2021 draft as the fourth overall pick for the Atlanta Falcons, a landmark moment that established him as the most highly valued tight end to ever enter the league. His journey to the pros was defined by a dominant collegiate career at the University of Florida. During a 2020 season impacted by the pandemic, Pitts showcased extraordinary efficiency, recording 12 touchdowns on just 43 receptions and earning the John Mackey Award as the nation's premier tight end.
His rookie campaign in the NFL was nothing short of historic. Alongside legends like Mike Ditka, Pitts became one of only two rookies at his position to ever eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. He also broke several franchise milestones for the Falcons, including a single-game record of 163 receiving yards and surpassing Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving yards in a season by a Falcons tight end.
Despite facing significant physical hurdles, including a torn MCL in late 2022 that required surgery, Pitts has maintained his elite status. His career has been marked by massive contract milestones, including a $32.9 million rookie deal signed in June 2021 and a subsequent three-year, $54 million agreement reached in June 2026. His ability to produce high-volume games—such as an 11-reception, three-touchdown performance against Tampa Bay—continues to cement his place among the game's modern greats.
