The Cuban defector who hit a historic home run on debut
In short: Lázaro Montes didn't just enter the Major Leagues; he shattered records from his very first night. From defecting at age 13 to becoming a high-stakes prospect, his journey reflects the intense pressure and explosive potential of international baseball talent.
Montes’ path to the Seattle Mariners began with a significant life change in 2018. At just 13 years old, he and his father, former Cuban track athlete Yosmel Montes, defected from Cuba. This move set the stage for Lázaro's professional career, which officially took shape on January 15, 2022, when he signed as an international free agent for a $2.5 million bonus.
Evaluators initially labeled him a high-risk, high-reward prospect. His climb through the minor leagues was marked by fluctuating consistency. In 2023 and 2024, he balanced power with plate discipline; while he maintained a high home run count, his strikeout rates swung wildly between 19 percent and 29 percent depending on the level of competition. By early 2025, however, his trajectory sharpened as he won the Northwest League Most Valuable Player Award.
The pinnacle of his rise occurred in September 2026. Facing the Boston Red Sox, Montes achieved a milestone as the initial Mariners player to homer during an opening game post-Kyle Lewis in 2019, while also being the first to reach two hits since Ichiro Suzuki did in 2001. A week later, he struck a 474-foot home run, marking T-Mobile Park's furthest distance recorded by Statcast tracking from 2015 onwards.
Despite these historic highlights, his debut season provided a sobering reality check on the jump to the highest level of play. While his power remained evident with four home runs, his strikeout rate climbed to 40.7 percent, placing him among the highest in the league and highlighting the immense difficulty of transitioning from the minors to Major League Baseball.
