From Cuban defectors to World Series hero: the rise of Adolis García
In short: In April 2023, Adolis García became only the fourth player in MLB history to record three home runs and two doubles in a single game. This explosive performance was a hallmark of a career defined by high-stakes impact, spanning from the Cuban National Series to championship glory in the Major Leagues.
Born in Cuba on March 2, 1993, José Adolis García Arrieta, known as "El Bombi," began his professional journey with the Tigres de Ciego de Ávila. His talent was evident early; he was voted the 2015–16 Cuban National Series MVP after posting impressive splits, including a .315/.395/.517 batting average in the second half of that season. After defecting from Cuba in 2016, García's path to the top was not immediate. He initially signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball on April 20, 2016, before moving to the United States to join the St. Louis Cardinals organization in February 2017.
García's career is marked by significant statistical milestones and postseason dominance. After finding his footing in the minor leagues, he reached the Major Leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in August 2018. Following a period with the Texas Rangers, he emerged as a premier power hitter. In 2021, he was named an American League Rookie of the Month and an MLB All-Star. His 2023 campaign was particularly historic; during the Texas Rangers' championship run, he set a single postseason record by recording 22 RBIs. This included a dominant ALCS performance where he hit five home runs across four games and was named the series MVP.
Despite his offensive prowess, García's career has faced physical hurdles. In 2023, he missed 10 games due to a right knee patella tendon strain, and later suffered a strained right oblique during the World Series. By 2026, a torn right lat muscle required season-ending surgery. His journey reflects the complex trajectory of many professional athletes, moving through international leagues and various MLB franchises, including the Cardinals, Rangers, and most recently, the Philadelphia Phillies.
