In short: Luis Robert Jr. defected from Cuba in 2016 to chase a Major League Baseball dream. Since then, he has navigated massive signing bonuses, historic rookie accolades, and a series of challenging injuries. His career highlights a unique path that even included a return to play for the Cuban national team.

Born in 1997, Luis Robert Moirán Jr. began his professional career in the Cuban National Series, playing for Ciego de Ávila between 2013 and 2015. His trajectory shifted in November 2016 when he defected from Cuba to pursue a career in the United States. By May 2017, he had signed with the Chicago White Sox for a $26 million bonus. His rise through the minor leagues was rapid; by 2019, he joined the exclusive 30/30 club, hitting 30 home runs and stealing 36 bases in a single season.

Robert’s impact on the major leagues was immediate. In 2020, he signed a six-year, $50 million contract before ever appearing in an MLB game. His rookie season saw him win a Gold Glove Award and finish second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. Notably, he hit a 487-foot home run during the 2020 postseason, the longest in White Sox history. Despite these successes, his career has been frequently interrupted by physical setbacks, including hip flexor tears, wrist sprains, and hamstring strains that have sidelined him for significant stretches.

The narrative of his career is deeply intertwined with his national identity. In 2023, he made history by becoming one of the first active MLB players to represent Cuba in the World Baseball Classic after defecting, a situation he described as strange given the limitations faced by other defectors. Following his tenure with the White Sox, Robert moved to the New York Mets in 2026 before being claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles in August of that same year, marking the latest chapter in a career defined by both immense talent and persistent physical adversity.
