The moment an Ottoman province decided it would rather be a nation
In short: In 1878, the Ottoman Empire was fracturing. While European powers carved up the Balkans like a cake, Albanian leaders faced a terrifying choice: be partitioned by their neighbors or organize a radical defense. What began as a local militia to protect land lines quickly transformed into a revolutionary movement for national identity.
On 10 June 1878, the old town of Prizren saw the formal establishment of the League of Prizren. It emerged as a direct response to the Russo-Turkish War and the subsequent Treaties of San Stefano and Berlin. These treaties threatened to partition Albanian-inhabited lands among Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and Greece. To counter this, Albanian leaders organized 'Local Councils for National Salvation' to protect territorial integrity, eventually merging into a single coordination body.
The movement's evolution was complex. Initially, the league's 'Kararname' (decision memorandum) was conservative; it sought to maintain the status quo and support the Ottoman Porte against external neighbors. It didn't explicitly demand independence or even autonomy. However, under the influence of Abdyl Frashëri, the movement shifted radically. It moved from defending Ottoman borders to demanding an independent Albanian state, eventually leading to open war against the Sultan's forces. This transition was fueled by the fear that the Great Powers—specifically at the Congress of Berlin—viewed Albania as merely a 'geographic notion' rather than a nation.
The League faced massive internal hurdles. Albanians were divided into four vilayets with no central nerve center, and religious differences often alienated the nationalist movement from religious leaders. Furthermore, the Albanian language lacked a standard alphabet or literary form, with different scripts tied to conflicting religious and political identities. Despite these fractures, the League managed to command 30,000 armed members, successfully repelling Bulgarian and Montenegrin forces in several regions before the Ottoman Empire eventually crushed the resistance in April 1881.
