How Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Turned Time Travel Into A Playful Open World
In short: Released in 2017, this action-adventure title pits iconic Marvel characters against the time-manipulating villain Kang the Conqueror. Players navigate Chronopolis, a sprawling hub world stitched together from seventeen distinct realities and eras, ranging from Ancient Egypt to a futuristic Manhattan, all while battling through puzzle-solving sequences and competitive arena combat.
The game serves as the third entry in the Lego Marvel series, following the 2013 original. It departs from traditional linear progression by introducing Chronopolis, a central nexus surrounding the citadel of Kang the Conqueror. This open world acts as a patchwork of disparate locations, including Wakanda, Xandar, and an apocalyptic version of Asgard. By manipulating time directly within this environment, players navigate these fractured realms to recover Nexus fragments and ultimately dismantle the barrier protecting the villain's stronghold.
Gameplay retains the signature blend of puzzle-solving and action-adventure mechanics found in previous Lego titles, while adding a four-player competitive battle mode. The roster is vast, featuring characters from both comic book lore and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Players can control figures like Spider-Man, Star-Lord, and Black Panther, each possessing unique abilities such as flight or wall-crawling. The game also introduces creative variations, including Iron Duck—Howard the Duck equipped with Iron Man armor—and Carnom, a unique fusion of Venom and Carnage.
Development of the title was impacted by the 2016–2017 video game voice actor strike, which prevented many previous cast members from returning. Consequently, the production utilized a new voice cast, featuring Peter Serafinowicz as Kang and Greg Miller as Howard the Duck, while incorporating archival recordings for Stan Lee. Following its initial launch, the game received extensive post-release support through ten downloadable content packs, introducing additional levels and characters inspired by various Marvel films and teams, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and the Runaways.
