From a small-town high school star to back-to-back Super Bowl glory
In short: Leo Chenal's rise in professional football is a study in versatile athleticism. Before becoming an NFL linebacker and two-time champion, he was a dual-threat powerhouse in Wisconsin, racking up thousands of yards as a running back while simultaneously anchoring the defense.
Chenal's trajectory began in West Sweden, Wisconsin, where his high school career at Grantsburg was defined by immense production on both sides of the ball. As a senior, he transitioned into a primary offensive weapon, rushing for 2,038 yards and 42 touchdowns while also contributing 226 receiving yards. Defensively, he mirrored this dominance with 120 tackles and seven tackles for loss. This versatility earned him state-level recognition as the Gatorade Football Player of the Year.
His collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin saw him refine these skills into a specialized defensive role. After an early enrollment as a freshman, Chenal became a standout linebacker, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors and being named the Butkus–Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year during his junior season. This transition from a high school dual-threat to a collegiate defensive anchor paved the way for his professional entry.
Selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, Chenal achieved immediate success. He secured two Super Bowl titles in his first two seasons, notably contributing key plays in both victories—including a blocked extra point and a forced fumble in Super Bowl LVIII. Despite a recent move to the Washington Commanders in 2026, where a neck injury sidelined him early in the season, Chenal remains a notable example of rapid professional ascent.
Beyond the field, Chenal's personal life is marked by a large family dynamic; he is one of fifteen siblings. He also married his college girlfriend, Ashley Luczak, in June 2021, balancing a high-profile athletic career with deep personal roots.
