From unseeded surprises to world titles: the rise of Leo Rolly Carnando
In short: In 2018, an unseeded mixed doubles pair shocked the badminton world by clinching gold at the Markham World Junior Championships. That was the beginning of Leo Rolly Carnando's ascent. From a junior prodigy to a senior mainstay, his journey illustrates the volatile path of elite sports.
Leo Rolly Carnando, born on July 29, 2001, joined the prestigious Djarum club in 2015. His early career was defined by a prolific junior circuit where he secured multiple titles in both boys' and mixed doubles. By 2018, he was selected for Indonesia's National training center, a pivotal move that transitioned him from a regional talent to a national prospect.
His breakthrough came in 2018 at the Markham World Junior Championships. Partnering with Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, Carnando and Jamil entered the tournament as an unseeded pair having only teamed up a few months prior. Their unexpected gold medal served as a catalyst for a dominant 2019, during which he won two gold medals at the Asian Junior Championships and the Kazan World Junior Championships, the latter involving a victory over top seeds Di Zijian and Wang Chang.
Transitioning to the senior level, Carnando narrowed his focus to men's doubles. This shift brought a new set of challenges, characterized by inconsistent results against the world's elite. While he secured his first World Tour title at the 2022 Singapore Open, his career has been marked by high-pressure fluctuations, including early-round exits in major opens and podium finishes at the SEA Games and Asian Championships. He remains a key figure in Indonesia's team success, contributing to victories in the 2020 Thomas Cup and the 2026 Asian Games.
Carnando's trajectory highlights the 'ups and downs' of professional badminton. Despite reaching the top 10 of the BWF world rankings with partner Daniel Marthin, his journey involves navigating the gap between junior dominance and the grueling consistency required to maintain a top spot in the senior BWF World Tour.
