From high school standout to NFL star: the rapid rise of Kayvon Thibodeaux
In short: A standout defensive force from South Los Angeles, Kayvon Thibodeaux has transitioned from a highly-rated recruit to a prominent NFL linebacker. His journey through elite collegiate success and professional milestones highlights a versatile athlete whose impact extends from the gridiron to the digital frontier.
Kayvon Thibodeaux's ascent began in Southern California, where he demonstrated elite defensive potential at Susan Miller Dorsey High School and Oaks Christian School. By his senior year in 2018, he was recognized as the top high school defensive player by USA Today, following a dominant season that included 18 sacks and 54 tackles. This performance helped him secure his status as one of the top two recruits in the 2019 class.
At the University of Oregon, Thibodeaux became a cornerstone of the Ducks' defense. During his time in college, he earned major honours, such as the 2019 Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year award and the 2020 Morris Trophy. Following a 2021 unanimous All-American nod, he joined the pros after being taken fifth overall by the New York Giants during the 2022 NFL Draft.
Thibodeaux's professional career has been characterized by both high-impact plays and significant physical challenges. His rookie season saw him earn a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team, highlighted by a touchdown via a forced fumble and recovery against the Washington Commanders. Despite facing various injuries, including a wrist injury in 2024 and a shoulder injury in late 2025, he has remained a central figure for the Giants, even as the team exercised his fifth-year contract option in April 2025.
Beyond football, Thibodeaux has explored diverse interests, from launching a cryptocurrency named '$JREAM' in 2021 to competing in Chess.com's BlitzChamp tournament. He credits his early experience playing chess with his uncles for helping him develop strategic principles that he applies to his football career.
