The €62 million teenager rewriting the history of defensive transfers
In short: At just 18, Leny Yoro became the most expensive player aged 18 or younger in football history. From the Lille academy to the bright lights of Manchester United, this French centre-back is combining elite physical stats with a composure that belies his years.
Leny Yoro’s ascent from the Lille academy to the Premier League has been defined by rapid, record-breaking milestones. Making his professional Ligue 1 debut in May 2022 at just 16 years old, he quickly transitioned from a substitute to a cornerstone of the Lille defense. By the 2/23-24 season, his impact was statistically undeniable: he was among the top 10% of defenders in Europe for both defensive duel success and aerial duel success, matching the rates of established stars like Virgil van Dijk. In fact, studies from October 2023 highlighted him as the second-best defender in Europe for winning duels across all age groups, boasting an 89% success rate.
His transfer to Manchester United in July 2024 for a reported €62 million (£52.2 million) signaled a massive shift in the market. The deal, which includes potential add-ons of up to €8 million, made him one of the most expensive centre-backs in history. Despite the immense pressure and interest from giants like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Yoro has maintained a reputation for technical composure and ball-playing intelligence, often noted for a passing completion rate of 92.3% during his time in France.
Beyond the statistics, Yoro's career is marked by a precocious leadership style. Though quiet and reserved off the pitch, his coaches noted his ability to grow in stature the moment he entered a match. Having represented France at every youth level from U17 to U23, he now faces the challenge of establishing himself in England, carrying the weight of a massive transfer fee and the legacy of the number 15 shirt, previously worn by United legend Nemanja Vidić.
