The unlikely origins of humanity's strongest soldier
In short: He is a legendary warrior known for unmatched combat prowess and an obsession with cleanliness. Yet, the character of Levi Ackerman was born from a mix of gritty crime, a documentary subject, and a dark comic book anti-hero.
Levi Ackerman, a central figure in Hajime Isayama's *Attack on Titan*, is far more than a simple action hero. His character design and personality are a complex tapestry of disparate influences. Isayama modeled Levi’s stature and presence after Rorschach from the graphic novel *Watchmen*, but intentionally inverted the character's hygiene; while Rorschach is famously unkempt, Levi is a notorious 'clean freak'. Even his name was inspired by a child Isayama observed in the documentary *Jesus Camp*.
The character's history is rooted in the 'Underground,' a dark setting that inspired the manga artist Hikaru Suruga to visit the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel for visual reference. Before joining the Survey Corps, Levi lived as a thief alongside Furlan Church and Isabel Magnolia. Their lives changed when they were offered citizenship on the surface in exchange for a high-stakes heist—a mission that ultimately led to the death of Levi's companions and his recruitment by Erwin Smith.
Beyond his combat skills, Levi's narrative depth lies in his complicated lineage and relationships. He is part of the Ackerman bloodline, a group that includes Mikasa and his maternal uncle, Kenny. His relationship with Kenny is a cornerstone of the series' emotional weight, exploring a shared history of loss and conflict. Despite his reputation as 'humanity's strongest soldier,' his journey is defined by moral ambiguity and the heavy burden of making dark decisions to ensure survival.
