From a ten-year-old scandal to captaining a Premier League club
In short: At just ten years old, Lewie Coyle was at the center of a massive footballing scandal involving Chelsea and Barcelona. Decades later, the former Leeds United prospect has risen to become the captain of Premier League side Hull City, proving a remarkable journey through the English football leagues.
Lewie Coyle's professional trajectory was marked by early controversy. While developing at Leeds United, he was involved in an alleged tapping-up scandal at age ten. His father claimed Chelsea offered £10,000 in cash and a new kitchen to secure a one-week trial, while Spanish giants Barcelona were also reportedly making an offer around that time.
Coyle's career has been defined by resilience and versatility. After making his first start for Leeds in January 2016, he faced significant setbacks, including a knee injury in October 2016 that left his team playing with ten men during extra time. He eventually moved to Fleetwood Town on loan, where he flourished under managers like Uwe Rosler and Joey Barton. While playing for Fleetwood, his dedication earned him the 2017–18 Players' Player of the Year and the fan-selected Junior Cod Army Player of the Year honours.
His ability to adapt was crucial; manager Joey Barton transitioned Coyle from his usual right-back position to central midfield and left-back. This versatility helped facilitate his move to Hull City in August 2020. Since joining Hull, Coyle has become a central figure, being appointed club captain for the 2022–23 season and signing a three-year contract extension in June 2023. He comes from a highly sporting family, with brothers involved in professional boxing and golf, and another in the Hull City Youth Academy.
The player's career has not been without external drama. Hull City began an inquiry in May 2025 regarding footage of a brawl near the Empress Pub involving a man thought to be Coyle, with his brother Rocco appearing to step in.
