The complex journey of a basketball star navigating borders and trades
In short: From the WCBA to the WNBA, Li Yueru’s career is a masterclass in professional movement. Her path involves intricate trades, international commitments, and the delicate balance of playing for both club and national teams across the globe. Navigating complex permissions and injuries, she remains a formidable force in international basketball.
Born on 28 March 1999, Li Yueru has established herself as a formidable force in international basketball. Her professional roots lie in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association, where she played for the Guangdong Dolphins from 2015 to 2020 and later for Inner Mongolia between 2020 and 2023. Her talent quickly caught the attention of the WNBA, where she was selected 35th overall in the 2019 draft by the Atlanta Dream.
However, Li's transition to the American league has been marked by significant logistical and contractual complexities. In early 2022, her rights moved from Atlanta to the Los Angeles Sparks in a trade involving Chennedy Carter, only for her to be traded again to the Chicago Sky just weeks later. Her arrival in Chicago was delayed by the need for official permission from the Chinese Basketball Association, and she eventually departed the team in July 2022 to prepare for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
Li's career has also been defined by resilience through injury and a prolific stint with the Dallas Wings. Despite missing the 2023 season due to an injury sustained while playing overseas, she returned to make a major impact for the Wings, notably recording a career-high 15 rebounds in a June 2025 victory. While her momentum was temporarily halted by an ACL sprain in August 2025, her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics—where she led the Chinese national team in points, rebounds, efficiency, and field goal percentage—solidified her status as an elite global talent.
