How thirty-six sultans ruled the Ottoman Empire for over six centuries of history
In short: The Ottoman dynasty defined a transcontinental empire from 1299 to 1922. While the sultan held absolute power as the shadow of God on Earth, the reality of succession was often brutal. From a survival-of-the-fittest struggle to a system of agnatic seniority, the throne’s path was rarely straightforward.
The Ottoman Empire began as a small principality in Bithynia under Osman I, who died in 1323 or 1324. Over the next six centuries, the House of Osman expanded its reach from Hungary to Yemen and Algeria to Iraq. By the late 15th century, the sultan sat at the apex of a complex hierarchy, holding supreme military, judicial, and religious authority. His legitimacy was reinforced by titles such as caliph of Islam and, following the 1453 conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed II, caesar of Rûm.
Despite the theory of absolute monarchy, the sultan’s power was constrained by the bureaucracy, military, and religious leaders. A significant shift occurred in the late 16th century during the Transformation of the Ottoman Empire, when the sultan's direct role in government began to wane. During this time, women of the imperial harem, particularly the valide sultan, wielded considerable influence in a period known as the Sultanate of Women. By 1876, the empire moved toward constitutionalism under Abdul Hamid II, who was later deposed after a brief return to personal rule.
Succession was the most volatile element of the state. Early rulers followed a brutal 'survival of the fittest' model where sons fought for the throne, often leading to fratricide. This changed in 1617 to agnatic seniority, where the oldest male relative inherited the title. This shift explains why later sultans were frequently brothers or uncles rather than sons. The sultanate was finally abolished in 1922 following the empire's defeat in World War I and the subsequent Turkish War of Independence, marking the end of the dynasty's long reign.
